Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 80: A Hundred Visions

Sunday, May 28

Dawn took a deep breath of the air as soon as she stepped outside. After last night’s rain, everything felt and smelled fresh, like it was early spring again, even though it was almost summer. The air was warm, but not hot. And, of course, the threat to everyone living on campus had finally been removed.

She squeezed Rico’s hand, and he squeezed back, giving her a fond smile. They were walking to the dining hall with Corrie, Edie, Roe, and Annie. It was time for one last relaxed brunch before summer break—tomorrow, Monday, would be their last day on campus, and brunch would not be available.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 79: Tension

Edie looked around at the others. None of them seemed to know what to say. She felt strange. Was it really over? It felt like it had been too easy, and at the same time… four people had died, and they’d collected lots of help and put other people at risk to make sure Gerlina was captured.

She must have been on edge, because a hissing noise made her look around wildly, her heart hammering in her chest. But it only took seconds for the source of the noise to become apparent: pouring rain was sweeping over the campus, crossing the magic building to hit all of them as they stood in the center green.

Corrie and Charlie both started to laugh at the same time. After a moment, Tom and the other werewolves joined in, then Troy and Link, and finally Edie and Dawn joined them.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 35: Scheduling

By the end of class, Corrie felt that she had made some progress. She could walk while in trance without breaking the trance immediately—she just had to do it very slowly, and she couldn’t pay much attention to her surroundings while she was doing it. But she was pretty sure that if she kept practicing, she would be able to be in trance while actually doing things (and not tripping) at the same time.

Professor Strega told them all that they were making good progress, and then asked to speak to Corrie, Dawn, and Roe after class. Corrie looked at both Dawn and Roe, confused, but neither of them seemed to know why they had been asked to stay late. Had the professor heard them talking about Roe wanting to reschedule her appointment?

Corrie only had a little while between her classes, but she and Edie went over what she’d heard about Jo. Edie was surprised to hear that anyone would want to leave campus, but realized it made sense after they discussed it. To them, campus had always been a dangerous place—it had been on their second night there that the entire hall had been awakened by Roe’s scream and everyone had discovered that Annie was missing (though the two things turned out to be unrelated). It had only gotten worse when most of them had forgotten about Annie, and Dawn had needed to rely on her newly-discovered Sight to remind everyone about her. Come to think of it, it had also been on their second day on campus that Corrie had discovered that her stalker ex-boyfriend, Paul, had followed her to college.

“Well, he shouldn’t have gotten mad at you for that,” Corrie said, incensed on her friend’s behalf. She felt her hands balling into fists. Unfortunately, not only was Link not there, but hitting him wouldn’t do anything anyway. “Just because he’s—“

Roe held up her hand, nodding. “He apologized for that the next morning. He said he just overreacted because his ego was hurt.” She smiled faintly. “He says I can have all the time I need to decide my answer, but he really wants me to say yes. Of course, we might not be able to see each other again at all after he graduates, because the king could decide to keep him at home and that’s that.”

They dawdled over their food a little longer—after all, everyone had to finish their dessert and no one had a ton of work due the next day—but finally headed back outside and toward Gilkey. Corrie checked her phone and was surprised to find that it was almost ten; time had passed quickly while she hung out with her friends.

She was even more surprised, as they approached Gilkey, to see Roe pacing back and forth in front of the door. She was easily recognizable even from a distance in the dark, because the light over the front door and coming out from the window in the common room shone off her long, pale hair.

Corrie and Edie knocked on Dawn’s door, but no one answered, so they figured she was with Rico and went to Roe’s room. Edie also expressed concern about Roe’s appearance, which made Annie give her another glare, but Roe dismissed them again. Corrie knew better than to keep bugging her about it—it would just make her defensive and even less likely to do what they wanted. Anyway, Roe did have an appointment with Professor Strega the next day.

When they stepped out into the late afternoon, Corrie noticed that the air was getting humid. “I wish Dawn were here,” she said. “She could tell us whether there’s a storm coming.”

“I’m in that class too,” Annie said. “I can sense the air currents enough to see if there’s a storm that’s close by. Want me to check?”

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 27: One Week

Thursday, May 18

Now that over a week had passed since Elrath’s death, the campus seemed to have relaxed somewhat. Corrie hadn’t heard any rumors or questions in a couple of days. Maybe they really had managed to forget about Elrath.

After all, it had never been only the magic on campus that kept people from understanding that faeries were real and lived there. The magic had just been enhancing the natural capability of the human mind to ignore things that didn’t fit in the world that they knew. If students had seen faeries day after day, eventually they would have had to admit that something strange was going on, but the vast majority of students didn’t have that much contact with faeries. So by the time they saw something else strange, they’d forgotten about the first thing.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 26: Other Friends

Edie headed up the stairs to the fifth floor. She marveled sometimes at how easy it was for her to climb the stairs now. Sure, she still got a little bit out of breath at the top, but she caught her breath again before she reached her own room. And her legs didn’t burn from all the climbing.

She hoped she didn’t get out of shape over the summer, or in their new dorm next year. They hadn’t learned yet whether they’d gotten the room assignment they wanted, but it probably wouldn’t be on the fifth floor of any building. Maybe if she did get out of shape, Corrie would finally convince her to go for a run some morning.

It would still involve getting up early, though, so probably not.

Dawn watched Roe lean back, obviously startled by the suggestion. But she shook her head slowly. “I don’t think so. I’ve seen Professor Lal’s teeth before, and the teeth in the vision I’ve been having don’t seem familiar. I think they’re shorter than hers. But I’ll check next week during class, just to make sure.”

“You carry a four-leaf clover with you?” Corrie asked.

Roe nodded. “Of course. All the time, now.”

“Me, too,” Annie said. “It’s not really enough, but it’s something small we can do to protect ourselves.”

“What does Link think of you carrying around something that can break his illusion all the time?” Dawn asked, raising her eyebrows.

“Oh, he’s all in favor of it, because it’s something that can help protect me from the faeries. He’d rather be around me all the time so he can protect me himself, but that’s not really his job. Doing it to Troy is his job.” Roe smiled. “I keep it in my pocket, so it’s not like he’s reaching into my pocket and touching it by accident. That’s the only way it would really bother him.”

“You know, I was thinking about Troy recently,” Corrie said. “We used to hang out with him, but since we’ve all come back to school for the spring semester we never see him. I guess we’re pretty bad friends if we only spend time with him when we have class together.”

“I hang out with him sometimes,” Annie said. “I think he’s more comfortable one-on-one with people. And he’s made other friends, too.”

Roe nodded. “He hangs out a lot with this one guy, Sean—Link wishes he would date more, but he has three more years for that.” She grimaced. Dawn wondered what exactly the story was with Roe and Troy; they’d gone on one date that had apparently gone so badly that Roe didn’t want to talk about it, but then Roe had started dating Link, and the two of them seemed to be really serious. Troy had missed out.

“Is that the same guy in our Intermediate Elementalism class?” Annie asked.

“Yeah, that’s him.”

“I remember Sean,” Dawn said. “He lost control of his water magic. I wonder if that has anything to do with them getting along.”

“They’re in a completely different class together. Math, I think.” Roe shrugged. “I don’t really know Sean all that well, but I’m glad Troy has made a good friend.”

“Maybe Sean will hook him up with some girls,” Corrie said with a laugh. “Well, I’m glad he’s not as awkward as he was last semester. How are things with Link, Roe?”

“Great,” Roe said with a grin. “He’s such a sweet guy. I’ve really never met a nicer guy.”

“Nicer than Rico?” Dawn teased. She couldn’t imagine anyone nicer than her boyfriend.

“Well, maybe Link is nicer to me and Rico is nicer to you,” Roe said, laughing. “What about you, Corrie? How are things going with Charlie?”

“The same as ever,” Corrie said, smiling with no particular emotion behind it. Dawn considered that her poker face. “We’re having fun. Nothing serious.”

“Yeah, but you’re not dating anyone else, are you?” Annie said.

“When would I have time?” Corrie complained. “I have classes, I have friends, I have running, and then I have to keep up with all the drama going on all the time on this campus. The only places I meet guys are in class and at Rainbow Alliance meetings, and I only have a chance with one of those.”

“We used to go to parties,” Roe said.

“I only remember one party, and I barely remember that,” Dawn said.

“I’ve been to a couple of the art department’s parties, but they’re not really my style. Too many drugs and too much sex.” Roe shook her head. “Besides, I’m not looking to meet guys.”

“Yeah, being single sounds like it sucks,” Dawn said. Roe laughed and they high-fived each other across the table.

Annie rolled her eyes at them. “It’s not that terrible. Maybe if you’re really looking for someone it’s a lot of effort, but I’m just not bothering. I figure it’s not the best idea to date someone on campus long-term anyway. Who knows what you’re going to do when you graduate?”

“I guess that’s true,” Dawn admitted. “But Rico and I have a few years to figure it out.” She suspected that Annie had another reason for not dating, but wasn’t going to push her.

“I’m trying not to think about that,” Roe said brightly, pushing around the food on her plate with her fork. “Let’s talk about something else. Does anyone have plans for the weekend?”

“Same as always,” Dawn said. “Studying, working, and cuddling with Rico.”

“Hopefully,” Corrie said, “we won’t have any new mysteries to solve.”
