Dawn, Corrie, and Edie walked the rest of the way to the dining hall, enjoying the weather, then claimed a table with their jackets (it was not quite warm enough for them to go without—though Rico was already in short sleeves every day) and headed over to the food.

Dawn got in line for the pasta station, noticing that the girl in front of her was vaguely familiar. She didn’t think about it until she started telling the dining hall worker what she wanted and the girl, waiting for her food to be finished, turned to look at her.

It was Edie’s friend—no, she wasn’t Edie’s friend anymore. She had been Leila’s friend and had annoyed and harassed Edie. Chris, that was her name.

“We told you about this,” Dawn said. Had it only been a couple of weeks ago? It felt like a very long time had passed since Elrath had broken the treaty and abdicated the faerie throne. “We didn’t believe you that the treaty wasn’t being enforced, and one of the reasons was that the magic is still keeping people from finding out about faeries.”

Elrath frowned. “We talked about how Alaineth had selectively enforced the treaty, and the division in magic between the faerie land and campus land. The division in the magic cannot be undone.”

Dawn caught sight of Edie and Corrie on the path and lifted her arm to wave at them, making big gestures so they could see her. Corrie waved back, and Dawn picked up her pace. The two of them must have been waiting for her; they’d all agreed to meet for dinner after their last classes, and they both had afternoon classes that let out earlier than hers.

She caught up to them with relief. “Happy Friday,” she told them.

“Yeah, you, too,” Corrie said with a laugh. “Had a long week?”

Charlie put his hand on the back of his head, rubbing his hairline. “Not really. I mean, obviously you’ve seen that I’m able to move through faerie territory, though I avoid it when I can.”

Corrie nodded. “Of course. It only makes sense, since they’re pretty scary.”

“Well, to be fair, we’re pretty scary, too.” Charlie grinned. In his human shape, it just looked like a friendly, somewhat goofy smile, but Corrie had seen him in wolf form. She could imagine the canine snarl hidden behind that kind face.

Corrie laughed. On her way back from the dining hall, she’d met Charlie on the path, and they were walking to Gilkey together. While she knew she should go inside and get back to studying for her math midterm, she was having too much fun to go be boring now.

“Aren’t you a bit cold?” Charlie asked her, draping his arm around her shoulders.

“We’re almost to Gilkey,” she pointed out. “And it’s not that cold tonight. I’m warm enough in my hat.”

“Are you sure?” He squeezed her shoulders, shaking her a little bit.

“It’s not your fault,” Edie said, confused as to why Leila would suddenly want to leave. It obviously bothered her that the professor thought Edie was crazy, but that didn’t have anything to do with Leila. At least, not with her specifically.

“Perhaps not,” Leila said. She was still frowning.

Edie had a sudden, scary premonition. “You’re not going to do anything to Sol, are you? It’s going to be fine. We’re halfway through the semester anyway.”

Book 1: New Student Orientation – Now at Smashwords

If you’ve been wanting an ebook copy of your own–in any format, not just the PDF I used to offer for donations–it’s now available at Smashwords!

The book is set to pay-as-you-wish, so please feel free to download it for free. However, if you want to tip me for writing the story by paying for a download, I’d be happy about that as well 🙂

The other books are coming to Smashwords, and will hopefully take less time, except that I need to get covers made for them, and in some cases, actually create titles…

I also want to do some more work on this website to make it easier to use in the meantime. If anyone happens to know of a plugin or theme for WordPress (I’m not sure if one or both would do the trick) that would automatically create links within each chapter’s post to the next and previous chapters, please let me know!

Edie shook her head. She wasn’t sure if she understood what Leila was getting at. “Are you just telling me that it would be hard for you to change? That’s okay. I can help you. You know I’m here for you, whatever you need.” She reached out, trying to take Leila’s hand, but Leila didn’t let go of the yearbook.

Leila shook her head. “I do not wish to change who I am. I would have to become a different person.”

“Just change one little thing at a time,” Edie said. “It doesn’t even have to be something that feels like a change. I mean, you’ve been pretending to be a student a lot—you were for most of last semester, anyway. What’s the difference?”

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 23: In Nature

Edie managed to focus on studying for the magic midterm, but that was probably only because she had two other people to help keep her on task. Her plan worked out well; she, Derwen, and Darcy were able to help each other a lot, bouncing ideas and questions back and forth. Edie had already thought she was pretty well prepared for tomorrow’s midterm, but she left their study session feeling even more confident than she had going in.

As she often did on Tuesday and Thursday nights, she had dinner with Derwen, Corrie, Annie, and Roe after studying. She made sure to let them know that she was meeting Leila after dinner, so they would understand that she had to rush off and Corrie wouldn’t worry about her.
