They passed a number of other people moving in as they headed down the stairs and out the door. Corrie, Edie, and Dawn waved and said hi to Shannon, the girl who had shown them her dorm last year in a bid to get them to move into Sayer. Roe greeted an Asian girl Corrie vaguely recognized as Lin, who’d been in Intro to Magic with them. And they walked past Chris, who had been one of the friends of Leila, Edie’s faerie ex-girlfriend. They didn’t speak to her. Corrie wasn’t sure how she and Edie felt about each other now, but it probably wasn’t good, considering their complicated history.

Corrie was leaving her psionics class in a bad mood—as she often did. She didn’t know if it was just because she had such success with elemental and trance magic that psionics was harder by comparison, or if she really just had a problem with psionic magic, but it always seemed to be an enormous strain for her to do just a very little.

In fact, she thought she had a headache brewing, which was why she’d parted ways with Roe immediately, rather than walking back with her to Gilkey as she often did—she needed some space and time alone. She was actually contemplating skipping her art class and either hanging out with Charlie or just holing up in her room alone until Edie came home. Either one would have been relaxing. But art class could be relaxing, too.

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 30: The Way It Was

Dawn, Corrie, and Edie walked the rest of the way to the dining hall, enjoying the weather, then claimed a table with their jackets (it was not quite warm enough for them to go without—though Rico was already in short sleeves every day) and headed over to the food.

Dawn got in line for the pasta station, noticing that the girl in front of her was vaguely familiar. She didn’t think about it until she started telling the dining hall worker what she wanted and the girl, waiting for her food to be finished, turned to look at her.

It was Edie’s friend—no, she wasn’t Edie’s friend anymore. She had been Leila’s friend and had annoyed and harassed Edie. Chris, that was her name.
