Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 24: Studying on a Saturday

Saturday, May 13

Edie turned the page in the book she was reading for American Literature. She had been enjoying Beloved, and really, she still was—it was a creepy story with a lot of depth both of character and of history. But she’d already finished one novel and read most of another in the time she’d been in the library, and it was strange to think, but she was getting sick of sitting around and reading.

She wondered if she should ask Dawn if she wanted to leave. But it had been Dawn’s idea to come to the library to study in the first place, and anyway, Edie wasn’t sure where she was at the moment.

She put her bookmark in the spot she’d reached and lifted her head to look around. She was in one of the relatively comfortable chairs in the reference area of the library. She wasn’t reading any reference books, but on a Saturday, this part of the library wasn’t busy. Dawn had started out here, taking a couple of books down from the shelves to look for sources for her paper, but in the last couple of hours she seemed to have wandered farther before returning.

Edie could certainly wait until Dawn had finished finding her latest source before asking to leave. She could read a few more pages.

Edie piled spinach, olives, and red peppers on her pasta to accompany the sauce and Parmesan cheese, then decided that was enough. If she was still hungry when she’d finished this, she would make herself get a small salad.

She sat at the table and ate alone for a few moments—it was really good—before her friends returned. When Dawn sat down, Edie remembered something else she’d said about her elemental magic class, when she’d learned how good she was at sensing air currents. “What about that cold air current you said you felt on campus?” she asked. “Did Professor Lal know anything about that?”

Dawn frowned. “She didn’t say anything about it in her email. I’d kind of forgotten about it, to be honest. Maybe I should try to sense it again. It was right by the wall, at the south end of campus, so if it has moved that will be interesting.”

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 22: Unraveling

Edie got through the rest of her classes that day and left the theater with a sense of relief. They’d performed their scenes for the playwriting class, and now the playwrights were working on revisions; the acting class was supposed to get the scenes back next week so they could perform the revised scenes as a final exam. Right now, Edie was just glad to have a break from the scene. She hoped their performance had inspired the playwriting student to make some good revisions.

When she returned to her dorm room, Corrie wasn’t home. Edie wasn’t really hungry yet, so she sat down on her bed to relax. She read a few pages of her book, but it wasn’t holding her attention, so she went into her trunk for her knitting.

As she dug around in her knitting bag trying to find a dropped needle, she came upon another project. She pulled out the yarn and needles and her heart sank. Continue reading “Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 22: Unraveling”

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 21: Water

Edie moved away from Derwen and Darcy to find an empty stretch of grass. Actually, it was about half grass, half clover, she saw as she sat down cross-legged with her bag behind her. She automatically scanned it for four-leaf clovers and found one. She reached out to touch it, wondering whether they affected her in any way. But they clearly didn’t—at least not to touch, and not if someone looked at her using one. They would have figured out that she was part faerie months earlier if four-leaf clovers did anything to her.

But she was supposed to be working on water magic. She closed her eyes and relaxed in her seat. Between fire, air, and earth practice, she’d gotten pretty good at this unusual sensation of settling into her magic, and she did it now, cupping her hands in front of her.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 20: Outside

Friday, May 12

Edie woke up, for once, excited and full of energy. She was finally getting to have the magic class they’d missed on Wednesday. She knew for sure that today’s class was on, because Ginny had sent out an email to the class warning them against missing it—with only five classes left in the semester, they couldn’t afford to skip anything, since they would be squeezing the rest of the lessons into the remaining time.

Today they had water magic. Edie wouldn’t want to miss that no matter what.

A little while later, there was a knock on the door. Corrie hopped up to answer it, and Edie saw her open the door to let Lorelei in. Lorelei looked around at the group of them and laughed. “You guys certainly know how to take advantage of a foggy day.”

“Come join us,” Edie said, gesturing at the pile of food. “There’s plenty.”

Lorelei shook her head. “Sorry, but I can’t. Charlie and I are responsible for the whole dorm. I wish I could just hang out with you guys.”

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 7: Fog Party, Part II

Edie and Derwen got back to Edie’s dorm room just as Corrie was leaving the bathroom, her hair plastered to her head with dampness. “Everyone already used up the hot water,” she complained. “Hey, Derwen.”

“Yeah, I noticed the same thing,” Edie said. “Did you get enough exercise running up and down the stairs?”

“I think so,” Corrie said. “At least I feel a bit better. What’s with the kettle?”

“It’s to make tea,” Derwen said.

“We’re having a potluck breakfast,” Edie said. “Everyone’s in our room. I hope you don’t mind.”

Edie decided that if she was stuck inside the building, she might as well go have a long, hot shower. Unfortunately, it seemed that a lot of other people in the building must have had the same idea, because there wasn’t much hot water left. Either everyone else had used it up, or the fog had done something to the hot water. Since it was a comfortable, warm temperature inside without the heaters running—though Edie was not about to open her window to see what the outdoor temperature was like—the former seemed more likely.

After she’d showered (at least she was clean now) and dressed, she grabbed up her trusty supply of bread and peanut butter and went looking for her friends. Corrie was still out of the room, but Dawn and Naomi were home next door, and they were able to fetch Annie and Roe from their own rooms as well.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 5: Thick and Deep

Edie woke up in a panic from restless sleep. After flailing her arms around for a moment and realizing that the only thing covering them was her sheet, she managed to sit up and shut off her alarm. That was all that had woken her—nothing nefarious. She still had to sit in bed and catch her breath.

She still felt fuzzy-headed, and she knew she hadn’t gotten anywhere near enough sleep. She, Corrie, Dawn, and Rico had stayed up for at least another hour after leaving the gathering in the common room, talking over the same things again and again. With no new information, they were unable to come up with any explanation as to why someone might have been killed on campus.

She was tempted to roll over and go back to sleep, but it was Wednesday, and her first class was magic class. Now that they were in the practical portion, she never wanted to miss magic class, and today they were starting on water magic. Knowing that her faerie ancestor was a water faerie, she wondered if she would have any special affinity with that kind of magic.

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 57: Gone

Edie stood looking at the dirt for what felt like a long time, but couldn’t really have been more than a few minutes. Nothing changed, except that the sounds of dripping overhead became louder. A few raindrops plopped into the dirt, dampening it. The tree no longer protected it.

Finally, Edie turned and began walking directly back toward campus. She was glad Leila had been prescient enough to give her an excuse for not entering through the front gate; she wasn’t sure she could walk all that way right now. She didn’t know how she felt, but she was so shaken that she didn’t want to have to make her way through the dark forest or face anyone.
