Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 12: Distance Sight

“The first thing you should do,” Professor Rook told them, his drawling voice washing over them like a slow wave, “is choose a location to look for. It may be best to choose a location on campus, something you can picture clearly. Unless you have tried this before and have confidence that your abilities can stretch a good distance, choose a location that is close by. You must start out with easy choices in order to reach the more difficult ones later. However, it must be something you cannot physically see at this moment.”

Corrie sighed silently and tried to think of something she’d like to look at in distance sight. She didn’t think she’d be any better at it than she’d been at any of the other psionic abilities. The only one she’d had any success with was pyrokinesis—and that was just because she’d gotten frustrated and used fire magic.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 11: Rumors and Speculation

Corrie walked to her magic class with the question of Elrath’s glamour on her mind. Would he have had to keep it up deliberately in order for it to continue after his death? That certainly argued for the theory that he had committed suicide. But if the glamour would have stayed with him after he died no matter what, that didn’t tell them anything.

If he had committed suicide, she didn’t think the administration needed to worry about anyone else following him. As far as she could tell, no one had known him well, so their grief wouldn’t drive them to it. In fact, if the people wanting to know more about him had talked to Dawn in an attempt to learn something, then she doubted she would be able to find people who were actually friends with him.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 10: Motivations

Corrie stared at Charlie, her mouth half open. Elrath was the victim? It was hard to believe. He was such a big, scary guy—surely he could take care of himself.

What could have killed him? And why?

But a moment later, she felt herself relax a little. She couldn’t be sure what would have killed him, but she could imagine many reasons why. He must have made himself enemies among the faeries. Even Tom didn’t like him—could Tom have killed him?

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 9: The Victim

Thursday, May 11

Corrie slept badly that night. She was inclined to blame the fact that she hadn’t been able to get out for her run the morning before, but she knew it was just as likely to be stress in not knowing who was dead. All her friends were okay, but she was friendly with a lot of people on campus. What if it was one of the girls she chatted with in her art class? Or someone she just smiled at when she walked back and forth to her classes?

If it was a stranger, that would almost be worse. If she was a student, Corrie would feel bad for not getting to know her before she died. If she wasn’t someone who belonged on campus, then that would be very scary in a completely different way. What would she have been doing there?

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 43: The Best Outcome

Corrie and Edie had collected Dawn, Roe, and Annie for dinner, and had a good time eating and talking. Edie told them all about her first practical magic class, including something strange that had happened to her, where she would touch the flame of her candle and it would go out. Corrie couldn’t remember anything like that happening in their class, and neither could anyone else—but they all readily admitted that they could easily have missed something that happened to other people, since they were so focused on their own magic.

As they headed back to Gilkey, enjoying the long spring afternoon, Edie suddenly darted off the path. “I have to check something,” she said, going around the side of the building.

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 42: Incomplete Messages

Corrie sat down on her bed, staring at Edie. “What did Leila say she’d done?”

Edie shook her head, looking down at her lap. “She wouldn’t tell me, just that there were ways to get people to understand what you want and that she didn’t alter Chris’ memories. She wouldn’t tell me whether or not she used magic. I…” She looked up, her mouth twisting to the side. “I didn’t push her very hard, because I figured if she wasn’t telling me, she probably thought I wouldn’t approve, so I didn’t want to hear about it and probably have a fight when she was the one who wanted to talk to me.”

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 41: I’ve Done Everything

Thursday, April 27

Corrie was leaving her psionics class in a bad mood—as she often did. She didn’t know if it was just because she had such success with elemental and trance magic that psionics was harder by comparison, or if she really just had a problem with psionic magic, but it always seemed to be an enormous strain for her to do just a very little.

In fact, she thought she had a headache brewing, which was why she’d parted ways with Roe immediately, rather than walking back with her to Gilkey as she often did—she needed some space and time alone. She was actually contemplating skipping her art class and either hanging out with Charlie or just holing up in her room alone until Edie came home. Either one would have been relaxing. But art class could be relaxing, too.
