Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 28: Smoothing

Friday, April 21

Dawn caught sight of Edie and Corrie on the path and lifted her arm to wave at them, making big gestures so they could see her. Corrie waved back, and Dawn picked up her pace. The two of them must have been waiting for her; they’d all agreed to meet for dinner after their last classes, and they both had afternoon classes that let out earlier than hers.

She caught up to them with relief. “Happy Friday,” she told them.

“Yeah, you, too,” Corrie said with a laugh. “Had a long week?”

Charlie put his hand on the back of his head, rubbing his hairline. “Not really. I mean, obviously you’ve seen that I’m able to move through faerie territory, though I avoid it when I can.”

Corrie nodded. “Of course. It only makes sense, since they’re pretty scary.”

“Well, to be fair, we’re pretty scary, too.” Charlie grinned. In his human shape, it just looked like a friendly, somewhat goofy smile, but Corrie had seen him in wolf form. She could imagine the canine snarl hidden behind that kind face.

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 25: Sharing Notes

“It’s not your fault,” Edie said, confused as to why Leila would suddenly want to leave. It obviously bothered her that the professor thought Edie was crazy, but that didn’t have anything to do with Leila. At least, not with her specifically.

“Perhaps not,” Leila said. She was still frowning.

Edie had a sudden, scary premonition. “You’re not going to do anything to Sol, are you? It’s going to be fine. We’re halfway through the semester anyway.”

Edie shook her head. She wasn’t sure if she understood what Leila was getting at. “Are you just telling me that it would be hard for you to change? That’s okay. I can help you. You know I’m here for you, whatever you need.” She reached out, trying to take Leila’s hand, but Leila didn’t let go of the yearbook.

Leila shook her head. “I do not wish to change who I am. I would have to become a different person.”

“Just change one little thing at a time,” Edie said. “It doesn’t even have to be something that feels like a change. I mean, you’ve been pretending to be a student a lot—you were for most of last semester, anyway. What’s the difference?”

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 23: In Nature

Edie managed to focus on studying for the magic midterm, but that was probably only because she had two other people to help keep her on task. Her plan worked out well; she, Derwen, and Darcy were able to help each other a lot, bouncing ideas and questions back and forth. Edie had already thought she was pretty well prepared for tomorrow’s midterm, but she left their study session feeling even more confident than she had going in.

As she often did on Tuesday and Thursday nights, she had dinner with Derwen, Corrie, Annie, and Roe after studying. She made sure to let them know that she was meeting Leila after dinner, so they would understand that she had to rush off and Corrie wouldn’t worry about her.

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 22: Meeting

Tuesday, April 18

Edie was in a good mood as she left her French class. They were having a two-part midterm this week, but she knew she’d done really well with the written part today—it had been about half multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions, and half a short essay. She wasn’t sure her grammar was perfectly fluent in the essay, but she was sure she’d gotten every single one of the questions right. She would do pretty well on the midterm even if the speaking part didn’t go as well.

“That wasn’t too bad,” Zip was saying as they walked out together. From the way she was talking over the test, quickly and repetitively, Edie surmised that Zip had been very nervous about it. “I think I remembered most of the questions. I’m not sure how well I did on the essay, though. You probably aced that part.”

Edie smiled. “I’m not sure. I mean, I did okay, I think. But it’s harder to remember what goes where when I’m actually trying to create a whole sentence that makes sense.”

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 20: Springtime

Monday, April 17

It finally didn’t just look like spring outside—it felt like it, too. Edie was out early that morning, hoping to find Leila and get another chance to talk to her, but she was nowhere to be seen. However, being out early gave her a chance to drop her jacket off in her room between breakfast and magic class, which was good, because the sun was out and it was warm.

A student in magic class even asked if they could take the class outside, and Ginny said no for two reasons: one, she was pretty sure there was nowhere they could sit that wasn’t muddy, and two, they were doing review before the midterm, and she didn’t want anyone getting distracted.

Chatoyant College Book 12: Chapter 16: The Sisters

Corrie and Annie waited around after finishing their breakfasts to stay with Edie, though Roe headed back before they did, saying she had homework to do. When Edie finished, the three of them headed back to Gilkey.

Corrie had something she was wondering about that she hoped Edie might have asked Leila—since Leila was the only one likely to have an answer for them. She didn’t know whether to ask about it in front of Annie, though. It might be a really uncomfortable question for Leila, if she really had been involved in the story that Link had told them.

And she didn’t want to bring up Leila in front of Annie any more than she had to. She was still hoping that Edie and Leila would break up for good and that Annie would then be able to date Edie.

Corrie could tell that Annie looked unhappy as they headed toward the cafeteria—she didn’t feel entirely happy herself—so she made a point of mentioning that she had left Edie a note. She also tried to look around surreptitiously when they left Gilkey, but she didn’t see any sign of Edie or Leila.

Annie and Corrie both cheered up once they started eating their food, but Roe still seemed grumpy, staring down at her eggs and not talking much. Corrie tried to involve her in the conversation, and finally came out and asked, “Roe, what’s wrong? If you were just up late last night, I’ll stop bugging you.”

“I was up kind of late, but that’s not the problem,” Roe said. She pushed her hair back out of her face and sighed. “I had a weird dream last night.”

“What exactly is the agreement?” Corrie asked. “What are you telling them, or asking them? I mean, you don’t have to tell me if it’s supposed to be a secret, but I’m really curious.”

Link shook his head. “It’s not really a secret. In fact, I guess it might be better if more people know. I trust you guys not to run around telling people about it.”

“Of course,” Edie said. “First of all, we’d have to explain about the faeries and the merpeople that go to college here, and then if they stopped laughing long enough to listen to the rest of it…”
