Edie waited for the professors to tell her, Corrie, and Dawn why they thought they would be able to help, but they seemed uncertain how to begin. Finally Corrie leaned forward. “Look,” she said. “We’d like to help, but we don’t know what you think we can do. Why would we know anything about what happened? Did they tell you we were there, or something? I don’t think they would lie, but maybe there’s some faerie trick going on. No offense.”

“That is exactly what we fear is going on,” Professor Lal said. “We are fairly certain that the killer is, in fact, a faerie. But we do not know how or why it is killing.”

Dawn crossed her arms over her chest. “Start from the beginning. What do you know, and what do you suspect?”

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 39: The Old Chairs

Edie, Corrie, and Dawn managed to have dinner by themselves—except for Rico, who was perfectly understanding when they reached a fork in the path and Dawn told him she had to go meet with the magic professors with her friends and he wasn’t invited. Edie actually felt a little jealous as he gave Dawn a kiss on the cheek and walked cheerfully back to Gilkey on his own. They were so sweet together, and Leila had never been that understanding, even when she had claimed to be.

But Leila was gone now. That was probably for the best. Edie missed her, but only because she’d been the first person to have a real romantic interest in her, at least who was actually a woman. She didn’t want that relationship back.

The three of them walked back over the paths to the magic building. It was still light out—the sun wouldn’t set for more than an hour—so people were still around, walking between the different dorm buildings, the library, the dining hall, and occasionally the academic buildings. Edie saw a whole group of people who appeared to be approaching the arts building.

Professor Rook was looking over someone else’s written assignment as Corrie approached, but when she reached his desk he looked up and nodded at her. “Corrie. I know this class has been frustrating for you, and I’m glad to see that you’ve had some success.”

She couldn’t help smiling. “I didn’t think I was psychic at all, and it turned out I was just waiting for the last class.”

He shook his head. “We still have mediumship to go, but that will be last. Very few have that ability, however, so do not be surprised if distance sight is, indeed, the only psionic ability you possess.”

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 13: Testing Abilities

Professor Rook was watching the class, his expression bored, but he caught Corrie’s eye and nodded slightly to her. She grinned back at him. She’d finally found something she could do, and do easily.

She glanced around the room to see that no one else was looking up in excitement, though a few people looked frustrated and others looked interested, staring down into their bowls with great concentration. Then she turned back to her bowl. She couldn’t just sit here and bask in her newfound ability. Like with elemental magic, she had to see how far she could go.

Maybe she should look for things that she didn’t know as well—places she could picture, but not clearly. Then she would have an idea of how well she needed to know a place before she could look at it with distance sight.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 12: Distance Sight

“The first thing you should do,” Professor Rook told them, his drawling voice washing over them like a slow wave, “is choose a location to look for. It may be best to choose a location on campus, something you can picture clearly. Unless you have tried this before and have confidence that your abilities can stretch a good distance, choose a location that is close by. You must start out with easy choices in order to reach the more difficult ones later. However, it must be something you cannot physically see at this moment.”

Corrie sighed silently and tried to think of something she’d like to look at in distance sight. She didn’t think she’d be any better at it than she’d been at any of the other psionic abilities. The only one she’d had any success with was pyrokinesis—and that was just because she’d gotten frustrated and used fire magic.

Chatoyant College Book 13: Chapter 11: Rumors and Speculation

Corrie walked to her magic class with the question of Elrath’s glamour on her mind. Would he have had to keep it up deliberately in order for it to continue after his death? That certainly argued for the theory that he had committed suicide. But if the glamour would have stayed with him after he died no matter what, that didn’t tell them anything.

If he had committed suicide, she didn’t think the administration needed to worry about anyone else following him. As far as she could tell, no one had known him well, so their grief wouldn’t drive them to it. In fact, if the people wanting to know more about him had talked to Dawn in an attempt to learn something, then she doubted she would be able to find people who were actually friends with him.
